AARP - Howard County Tax Aides - $5,000Funding to provide additional laptops, printers and other peripherals for AARP Tax Aide volunteers to provide tax services to the low income families involved in the Community Action Council'ss financial counseling classes. They will provide two volunteer counselors one day a week at the County's Gateway Building to work with 8-10 families each day.
Alianza de la Comunidad - $25,000Grant supports the continuation of parenting classes and workshops to Hispanic
parents living in Howard County, in order to strengthen their parenting skills and empower them to become advocates
for themselves and their children. They use a program called Active Parenting, which has created materials specific
to Spanish speakers.
Better Bedrest - $4,969Better Bedrest will conduct an outreach project to increase their visibility and calls from
Howard County residents by reaching out to the OB/GYN practices in the community as well as increasing community
awareness resulting in increased fund development.
Boy Scouts of America - $13,500Project supports the Baltimore Area Council, Boy Scouts of America expansion of their two Howard County high school pilot
project, Cope on the Road to an additional four high schools in Fall 2009 for a total of 900 students in the six high
schools. Cope on the Road involves a series of initiative games and rope elements that instill the following seven key
skills: teamwork, leadership, decision making, problem solving, communication, trust and self-esteem.
Community Action Council - $15,000Support for the Step Up Preschool Screening Initiative to provide multi-disciplinary screening services
(hearing, vision, developmental, social and emotional, speech and language and oral health) to 100 eligible children
who are not currently enrolled in one of the three early intervention programs available in Howard County for children
from low income families. Children in need of remedial services will be referred to appropriate service providers for
intervention. CAC will provide follow-up and identify needed resources for those children needing interventions.
Courtesy on the Road, Inc. - $5,000Grant supports the continuation of Campaign for Courtesy on the Road,
an incentive-based program to encourage teenage drivers to consider and monitor their actions on the road,
avoiding road rage and adopting behaviors that will improve their safety and the safety of everyone on the roads.
FIRN, Inc. - $20,000Funding will support emergency preparedness activities for the foreign-born residents of Howard
County.
HC DrugFree - $29,880Funding to assist HC DrugFree maintain a reduced infrastructure necessary to provide mission-related services
and maintain their capacity to respond to the needs of the community.
Howard County General Hospital - $19,950Grant provides for the expansion the hospital’s perinatal bereavement program to include perinatal
hospice services to support families as they transition from delivery to a possible short life of their baby. Funds will
provide for the development of hospital policies that support palliative care in planning for an infant’s death, materials,
staff education and increased hours for the HCGH Perinatal Bereavement Coordinator to provide emotional, spiritual
and practical support to families as they make and carry out this difficult decision.
Lazarus Foundation - $5,000Lazarus Foundation will develop a mentor’s handbook for high school students to use as part of the
"PC’s 4 Kid’s" initiative. Technology savvy high school students are mentors who teach the kids who receive
computers as part of the initiative how to properly use them.
Leadership Howard County - $17,500With support from the Foundation a newly designed Leadership Premier program began with the 2008-2009 class
which incorporated changes in the way participants experience community issues, interact with decision makers and
expand their perspectives for future community volunteer and leadership commitments. Based on the experiences of
the first year LHC will be maintaining the consultant’s services for and additional year to address issues around
design and to complete the facilitation and evaluation components.
Maryland Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped - $9,000The Maryland Foundation for Dentistry for the Handicapped is a non-profit that provides pro bono dental
services for Howard County residents who are disabled and low income. The Howard County chapter, Donated
Dental Services (DDS) will determine applicants eligible for service from the 32 individuals on the waiting list who
have been waiting the waiting longest for services and provide needed services.
STEM Resource Center - $20,000The HCPSS STEM Resource Center will conduct an educational and hands on pilot event and eight
subsequent events to demonstrate the fun side of science, technology, engineering and math for children from age
four to eleven and their parents in communities that typically have low levels of participation in STEM activities as
a means to encourage careers in these fields.
The Red Devils - $4,000The Red Devils provide quality of life services such as transportation, meals and groceries, house cleaning,
complimentary therapies, and prescription drug co-pays for patients with breast cancer and their families.
Funding will support their Howard County activities with their partners in the county, Howard County General
Hospital, the Howard County Health Department and the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center.
The Serenity Center, Inc. - $20,000Funding will support the expansion of wellness programs, such as acupuncture treatment, holistic therapy and
wellness workshops and seminars, available to the 400 plus participants of the 12-step programs offered at the
Serenity Center. The Serenity Center will work with the nationally recognized Tai Sophia Institute.
We Promote Health - $5,000In collaboration with the original partners of the 10-week program Get Active
Howard County, the Columbia Association and the American Cancer Society,
We Promote Health plans will take the lead in expanding the program to a year round initiative entitled
Stay Active Howard County.

A Woman's Journey - $5,000Grant will support efforts to maximize the participation of Howard County women in the Johns Hopkins Medicine's annual woman's health program, A Woman's Journey.
Christ Church Link - $3,500Grant provides prepaid cell phones or air time cards to those in crisis to enable communication with community resources offering crisis aid.
Christ Church Link - $5,000This grant will provide bridge funding while the organization works with other funders to find a long term solution for sustainability or to develop a transition plan if sustainability is not an option.
FIRN, Inc. - $2,000Funds support direct health care costs for the Howard County Muslim Foundation's "Living Well" Health Fair.

Howard County Health Department - $2,000Grant will support a statewide Primary Care Summit to be held at Howard Community College and hosted by the Howard County Executive and Health Officer to raise public awareness of the primary care access crisis and formulate plans of action that will help resolve some of the problems facing primary care physicians in the State of Maryland.
Lisbon Elementary School - $1,750Grant will provide funding for a program for struggling readers from Lisbon and Bushy Park Elementary Schools to receive direct instruction and practice during the summer.

HC DrugFree - $7,370HC DrugFree plans to expand the successful Teen Job and Volunteer Fair in 2009 to integrate a health and wellness component of interest to teens and their parents.
HCGH Wellness Center - $12,100Healthy Families Howard County is an outreach program of HCGH. The proposed project focuses on the development of a new five year strategic plan to guide the Advisory Board; as well as the development of a new system of evaluation and the development of a marketing plan and new marketing materials.
Howard County Mental Health Authority - $40,000Howard County Mental Health Authority in partnership with the Maryland Coalition of Families for Children’s Mental Health and the Howard County Local Children’s Board is requesting funds for a System of Care Planning Grant to address the service needs of Howard County youth with intense emotional/mental health needs and their families.
Humanim - $6,982Project is to will establish web based training programs to educate staff working in Howard County with the objective of promoting health and wellness of the consumers receiving services in Howard County. Effectiveness will be measured using biometric screenings.
Maryland Food Bank, Inc. - $25,000Funds are requested to supplement the inventory of donated food with high quality, nutritious foods that would address the needs of Howard County’s food bank, pantries and other county network partners to increase their buying power and reduce the cost to all Howard County network partners for one year.
Northfield Elementary School - $5,558The proposed program would link the school’s health programs to the Developmental Asset framework, establish a health webpage and offer opportunities for students to design and carry out health related events and activities.
Office of Children's Services - $20,000This program, in collaboration with the Columbia Housing Corporation (CHC), education focused on diet and activity challenges common to lower income families. The culturally sensitive curriculum will be presented to parents and school-age children at several CHC locations.
On Our Own of Howard County, Inc. - $9,100Priority for this project is to train a cadre of staff and a number of mental health consumers to teach the Individual Wellness and Recovery program to members of On Our Own of Howard County and other mental health consumers in Howard County.
Reservoir High School - $6,500Reservoir High School requested funding to support a three day off-site student and staff spring retreat to develop team-building and cultural sharing within the school using the Developmental Asset framework.
St. John Baptist Church - $10,000Grant will provide funding for St. John Baptist Church and its partners to pool of HIV/AIDS in Howard County through educational programs, counseling and testing, as well as training leaders of community-based organizations to organize similar HIV/AIDS prevention and testing programs.

Alpha Foundaton of Howard County - $3,000Grant will enable members of the Alpha Achievers program to attend the Search Institute conference in November where they will be making a presentation.
Asian American Healthcare Center - $3,000Funds support the development of materials for and other costs associated with conducting a major meeting of the Korean community to raise initial funds in support of their efforts to provide free healthcare for members of the Asian American community who are uninsured or underinsured.
Bushy Park Elementary School - $3,500The focus of this grant is to support struggling readers from Bushy Park and Lisbon Elementary Schools with ongoing instruction and practice during the summer to prevent loss of skills and to promote fluency.
Columbia Housing Corporation - $2,000Program supports the establishment of the developmental asset framework within the six Learning Centers which serve 150 children ranging in ages 6-14.
Economic Development Authority - $10,000Project supports a symposium is to articulate a vision and build support for making Howard County a national innovator in developing the next generations of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) leaders.
Forest Ridge Elementary School - $2,750Grant will provide transportation for students to receive guidance and support while completing their homework after school.
Glenwood Community Center - $7,700Grant provides funding of a part-time position to supervise the after-school teen programs at the Glenwood Community Center.
Glenwood Middle School - $1,500This program will encourage literacy, foster a sense of community and provide a shared experience through which to discuss middle school issues such as "bullying".

Korean American Community Association - $10,000This program will further develop and refine the mentor and mentee leadership development pilot program for Korean youth and their families to build positive character by using the Developmental Asset frameworks as a means of addressing issues facing Korean youth.
NAMI - Howard County - $20,000Funding assists organizational capacity building support to increase the organization's visibility and ability to successfully increase their outreach to the community, thus being able to provide additional programs to educate, to support and to advocate for individuals and families in Howard County who are affected by mental illness.
NeighborRide - $23,000Funding supports capacity building and sustainability through continuing upgrades of computer software and the addition of a community outreach coordinator to raise awareness of services thus increasing visibility and name recognition. Specific outreach will be directed toward the foreign born and the county.
The Arc of Howard County - $20,000Funding would enable The Arc to create a global web presence that will, job announcements for its clients, track volunteer opportunities, generate income by allowing donors to give online and communicate advocacy as well as develop a DVD aimed at potential employers and focused on the abilities and success of people with developmental disabilities in the workplace.
The Salvation Army - $15,000This program provides supports for crisis services for Howard County families with low-income in need of eviction and utility turnoff prevention assistance that will help to maintain safe, stable housing and ultimately help to reduce homelessness in Howard County.
Volunteer Center Serving Howard County - $25,000Funds will enable the Volunteer Center to further enhance the disaster services of VCSHC specifically related to needs identified by the Human Services Master particular focus on youth and older adults.
