 Grassroots is offering a series of training courses FREE to people who live or work in Howard County.
Registration is currently open for some of these session dates. Register now. Below are all available trainings and dates this summer and fall:
Question-Persuade-Refer (QPR): In this two-hour training, you will learn how to recognize the warning signs of a person in a suicide crisis (“question”), suggest that the person seek support (“persuade”) and connect the person to local resources (“refer”). Anyone can take this simple course and learn how to refer someone in a suicide crisis for help. Cost: Free to people who live or work in Howard County; $10 for others

- July 15, 2017 from 10:30AM-12:00PM at the Savage Library
- August 24, 2017 from 3:30PM-5:00PM at the Horizon Foundation office (Columbia) –This date is intended for parents of adolescents
- August 25, 2017 from 3:30PM-5:00PM at the Horizon Foundation office (Columbia) –This date is intended for adolescents aged 12-18 years
Mental Health First Aid: Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack — even if you have no clinical training — Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health related crisis. In this eight-hour course, you will learn how to apply a five-step action plan to situations such as helping someone through a panic attack, engaging with someone who may be suicidal or assisting an individual who has overdosed. Cost: Free to people who live or work in Howard County; $69 for others
- June 2, 2017 from 8:30AM-5:30PM at the Horizon Foundation office (Columbia)
- September 21, 2017 from 8:30AM-5:30PM, location TBD – This date is intended for faith-based community/clergy staff/members only
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST): This two-day workshop will teach you how to recognize the warning signs of someone who may be contemplating suicide and actively work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Over a million people around the world have participated in this award-winning program, including many health care providers. Most people thinking about suicide don’t actually want to die, but need help deciding to stay alive. You don’t need any prior training to attend ASIST–just a willingness to make a difference. Cost: Free to people who live or work in Howard County; $129 for others
- June 23 & June 24, 2017 (must attend both days) from 8:30AM-5:30PM at Bridgeway Community Church
- October 26 & October 27, 2017 (must attend both days) from 8:30AM-5:30PM, location TBD
