We are excited to launch a new initiative around health and equity in Howard County!
For the Horizon Foundation, equity means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to live a long, healthy life – and nobody is left behind because of who they are or where they live.
The Challenge
Research shows that some members of our community face significant barriers to good health, overall wellness and opportunity. This is particularly true for our communities of color, which experience disproportionate levels of chronic disease, deaths and disabilities.
Our Strategy
The goal of our work will be to reduce health disparities and work toward racial equity in health by:
- Advocating for policies and practices that break down longstanding health barriers and promise more equitable health outcomes for people of color
- Elevating the voices of leaders from communities of color
- Strengthening the abilities and resources of community organizations to advance movements for social change
How you can get involved
Horizon is seeking partner organizations and individuals who are passionate about working with communities of color in Howard County. We will be releasing an RFP in August for grant funding.
We will also be hosting three “Introduction to Racial Equity” workshops in September. The workshops will help foundation grantees and community stakeholders develop a shared understanding and language regarding equity, equality, structural racism, diversity and inclusion.
We will also be hosting a Racial Equity Summit on Saturday, November 10. Stay tuned for more details!
Racial equity is an important issue for our community and we are pleased to undertake this new initiative with our partners and stakeholders.
